The 20-year-old actor was appearing in the off-Broadway production Getting Out at the time, and Kyra, who had seen it, let him know she liked his performance. For his part, Kevin has confessed that he has no recollection of this interaction. But regardless, it certainly wouldn’t be their last.

Fast-forward nine years later to early 1987, when the pair were filming Lemon Sky. That’s when their true introduction took place. Bacon had developed a crush on her and made it a point to hang out with her outside of work. He asked her out to dinner; she accepted, and they enjoyed their time together. Looking back on it, Kyra has said she woke up the next morning feeling a sense of familiarity. She eventually recognized that this feeling was connected to Kevin.

A Comfortable Relationship

It didn’t take long for things to get serious between the couple. Once April 1987 had arrived, they could be spotted together publicly. Later that year on Christmas Eve, Bacon proposed to Sedgwick, who happily accepted. However, there was one issue that Kyra needed to bring up with Kevin: she wasn’t a fan of the engagement ring he had chosen. For his part, Bacon, who admittedly didn’t know much about jewelry, believed he had selected wisely. In any event, she felt comfortable enough to tell him what she thought about the ring, and he didn’t take offense. They returned to the jewelers so she could pick a replacement. Shortly after their marriage, Kyra and Kevin started a family. Their son, Travis, was born in 1989, followed by their daughter, Sosie, three years later. Both children have followed artistic paths of their own. Travis is a music composer, while Sosie has followed in her parents’ footsteps as an actress. Bacon’s 2006 directorial debut, Loverboy, was a true family affair. Sedgwick was the star of the movie, while the children had small roles. 

In more recent years, the couple has taken turns directing each other’s projects. For instance, Kevin directed several episodes of Kyra’s long-running TV series The Closer, while she later directed the 2022 film Space Oddity, which starred Kevin.

Weathering Difficult Times Together

For instance, in 2008, the couple discovered that they had become victims of Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme, losing most of their savings as a result. Worst of all, they only found out when the rest of the world did. That money represented decades of hard work and accumulated wealth. But instead of letting this terrible situation come between them, it made their relationship even stronger. They reminded themselves they would recover just fine. They still had their health, their children were healthy, and they had plenty of acting and directing projects lined up. So instead of feeling sorry for themselves and all that they lost, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

When Kyra and Kevin celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in 2023, they posted messages on social media to commemorate this occasion. Sedgwick shared a photo from when they were filming Lemon Sky and referred to Bacon as “the man I met in 1987.” Meanwhile, Bacon reflected on their successful marriage with a message that was short but sweet: “35 years feels like a heartbeat.”

The celebrity pair have been very candid about the reasons that have contributed to the success of their marriage. For instance, in an interview with People, Sedgwick stated they were each other’s biggest support and fan. She also cited Bacon’s sense of humor as a huge reason. From Bacon’s perspective, a strong relationship is more than just grand romantic gestures, it’s about compatibility.
